1. Question....What is one thing you want people to know about you that they wouldn't otherwise know?
Answer....A lot of people seem to want to know who Tim Smith is? Especially since I came out of no where quickly. I'm just a guy who is out here trying to get by. I've never been in trouble with the law but I am far from being an angel. I've made many mistakes in my life. Some which I regret deeply. Over time I learned from those mistakes. Now I use the fires from the bridges I've burned to light my way to the future. (Thanks for that Kelsey)
I did not wake up one morning and say wow I think I'll get involved with Moebius Syndrome. It started when I went out to lunch one Sunday with a moebius mom, Katie Pennycate. After lunch we went to the cemetary to pay our respects to her baby daughter Hannah who had moebius and passed away because her trach came out one night. I've attended many funerals and i've been in many cemetaries. But i've never been emotionally moved like I was while kneeling down by Hannahs grave. This little girl who had the same syndrome I did was dead. She did nothing wrong. She deserved better. When I was Hannah's age I was not exspected to live, but for some reason I did and she didn't. What had i done to deserve it? From that day on I've tried to do what ever i can to make a positive difference in the lives of people with moebius syndrome. 2. Question ....What has been the toughest challenge for you having Moebius, and how did you overcome it?
Answer.....The hardest thing has been to gain acceptance from others. When I was young other kids did not want to play with me because I was different. As an adult some girls didn't want to go out with me because I was different. As an adult some people did not want to be my friend because I was different. I tried not to let these things get me down. I remained persistant and I gained people's acceptance and respect. At least I hope i did. lol
3. Question....Would you say that there is also a positive side to having Moebius Syndrome?
Answer.... Oh yes. People who have moebius are born to play poker. There were many of nights in my youth when having moebius syndrome filled my pockets with change.
4 Question....Considering the role that doctors have played in your own life, if you had to give a medical practitioner advice on how to treat someone with Moebius, what would it be?
Answer.... Listen to the patient. If the patient is a child listen to his or her parents. They are the experts.
5 Question....Bullying is finally being taken seriously after numerous young people have committed suicide. How can young people with Moebius Syndrome confront bullies and maintain a positive outlook?
Answer....Bullying goes way beyond just people with Moebius Syndrome. Kids who are bulied should report the bullying as soon as it starts. The kids who do the bullying must be held accountable. More importantly the parents whose clild does the bullying must be held accoutable. It all starts at home. We have to do a much better job of educating people as to why this is wrong. The young people who have taken their own lives because of being bullied are not failures. We are the failures because we failed to prevent it.
Everyone should hold their head high. In someone else's eye you are a hero.
6 Question.... How does the Many Faces of Moebius Syndrome differ from the Moebius Syndrome Foundation and the Moebius Trust?
Answer....We provide a website where people with moebius syndrome can share their stories and their photos. We do not raise money for research like the foundation or the trust do. Instead of listing all the differences I would rather state the one thing we all have in common. We want to help. We want to make a positive difference in the lives of people with moebius syndrome and their families.
7 Question.... What advice would you give to parents considering smile surgery for their child?
Answer.... I would not give them any advice. It's a personal choice only the individual and their family can make. I would support them One Hundred percent with which ever choice they made.
