Logan

"Logan's Story"

My due date was the 6th of February 2006, but Logan was born on the 19th of January 2006 instead. My pregnancy had it's ups and down, but everything was fine until my last check-up on the 17th of January when we were informed that Logan was in a transverse (sideways) position. This meant a cesarean was really the only option.  We were overwhelmed to welcome out beautiful angel into the world, much sooner than we expected. At first there were tears of joy, but soon it turned into tears of frustration as I thought I was doing something wrong because Logan did not want to latch or suckle when I tried breastfeeding. When my son started loosing weight that first 2 days, I insisted that we start bottle feeding him and that was difficult, but much easier than the breastfeeding.

We live in a small coastal town with most of the doctors situated some distance in a nearby city. I never noticed anything wrong with my son as he was perfect in my eyes, but my Mother noticed that when he smiled, only one side of his face moved.  I then noticed that he never turned his eyes sideways and hardly blinked. After a trip to an eye specialist, we were told some nerves might be damaged but it can only be established at a later stage.  I took him for further test to the nearby city and the doctor referred us to have a MRI done to establish if nerves in his head were damaged during the cesarean.  We had to wait a couple of days before we got an appointment for the MRI, but while waiting in the waiting room at the hospital, the doctor called and asked us to see him as soon as possible. That day the doctor gave what my son had a name. My son had moebius syndrome. I cried like it was the end of the world, but it was the beginning. I read every bit of information about Moebius and I realized that my child was blessed and so was I.

I enjoy every day of his little life and I am so proud of him when he does something that should be so easy for any "normal" child his age. The day when he sipped from a straw for the first time, I was in a public restaurant and I didn't care who looked at me when I showed me joy and praised him for being able to to such an easy task. He is now 3, and going strong. This will not get us down, ever.

He loves his daycare and he is surrounded by friends. I share with everyone my knowledge about Moebius Syndrome.
